Most people do not believe me when I say I love traveling alone, but I do! Traveling alone allows me to connect with myself that we as humans often forget about when going through the motions of every day life.
It starts with the time spent in the airport alone + the flight. If traveling out the country, you have a good 6+ hours in the air to stop and contemplate. My favorite is looking out the window while above the clouds. There is a sense of serenity that you can’t seem to get anywhere else. It allows you to daydream about what life would be like if this was your monthly routine. It sucks you in to a fantasy world or luxury travel + private jets. This is a good thing! Daydreaming is free, and no one can see or hear your thoughts, DO IT!
Another great pastime? Reading! I’ll be the first to admit, I was not a huge fan of picking up and reading a book just for fun. When I read, it was because it was either for school, or because I just really wanted to read the book. My travels have changed my outlook on reading for leisure. I’ve read so many wonderful books while in the sky. My favorites are self-help/realization books (also good in combination with the sky gazing/fantasizing you’ll inevitably be doing) + autobiographies. Reading also helps past the time if you’re anxious or have anxiety about flying for several hours. Gossip magazines are cool too, just for giggles, but do not aid much in the enhancement of your life.
The calmness of the hotel room at night when its just you and a foreign country, is something to relish in. You start to think of every possible activity you could do while there. DO THE ACTIVITIES! ALL OF THEM! Experience every single thing you would not normally do at home/can’t do at home. If the country has a couple of the same restaurants back home, try to stay clear of those and experience new cuisine. Sky Dive, Bungee Jump, Climb Mountains, Dance in the street. Just make sure to get the full experience + your monies worth.
Out of all of my trips, the only time I wish I had someone with me was during photo time. Our friends & families already know our angles, it’s familiar. Plus it saves you from having to ask a complete stranger, but oh well! That’s what selfie sticks are for! Also, it takes literally 2 seconds to ask someone to snap your pic. Usually if they’re tourists, they want their picture taken too and you all can exchange favors.
My goal is to get as many millennials as I can traveling alone or as a group! See this vast world! Most importantly, and as always, DO NOT LET FAMILY, FRIENDS, or the MEDIA keep you from treating yourself and seeing this vast world. Only YOU can stop YOU.
